But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased, and said unto them, "Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of God." Matthew 19, Mark 10 Luke 18 |
And at this time the mothers brought to Jesus their little children, that he might lay his hands on them and bless them. The disciples were not pleased at this, and told them to take their children away. But Jesus called them to him, and said, "Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of God. Whoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter into it." And he put his hands on them and blessed them. |
It is well when we come to Christ ourselves, and bring our children. Little children may be brought to Jesus as needing, and being capable of receiving blessings from Him, and having an interest in His intercession. We can but beg a blessing for them: Christ only can command the blessing. It is well for us, that Christ has more love and tenderness in Him than the best of his disciples have. And let us learn of Him not to discourage any willing, well-meaning souls seeking after Jesus, though they are but weak.
Those who are given to Christ, as part of His purchase, he will in no wise cast out. Therefore He takes it ill of all who forbid, and try to shut out those whom He has received. And all Christians should bring their children to the Savior that He may bless them with spiritual blessings. The people were bringing little children to Jesus, but the disciples expressed strong disapproval of what they were doing. |

At this point it is well to remember Mark 9, 33-37. Jesus embraced a little child and unambiguously announced, "Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me; and whoever receives me receives not me but the one who sent me." The disciples had obviously not learned the earlier lesson of discipleship which involves welcoming the "least ones."
"According to this shocking new standard of Jesus, embracing a child is like embracing God". Robert Fowler
