"But, how do I know your interpretation is correct?"
In our post-modern world, what used to be the common-sense meaning in scripture is now up for grabs to individual interpretation and spiritualization. "Literal meaning" has been shunned to the point that Christians hesitate to say the word even when it applies.
When the text is clear for its common-sense literal meaning, yet you are challenged that the scripture doesn't say what it says; before banging your head against the wall in frustration, consider the words of a famous non-believer to understand their motives:
"In precisely this way literature, by refusing to assign an ultimate meaning to the text and to the world as text, liberates what may be called an anti-theological activity, an activity that is truly revolutionary since to refuse to fix meaning is, in the end, to refuse God."
